Announcement and Call for Papers

The Maryland Water Monitoring Council will hold its 20th Annual Conference at the Maritime Institute, North Linthicum, Maryland, on Friday, November 21, 2014. The theme of the one day conference is The 20th Annual MWMC Conference: Looking to the Past to Guide our Future. Registration will begin at 7:30 AM and the conference will adjourn at 4:30 PM.

Much has happened in the world of water monitoring over the past 20 years. This year’s conference will highlight the advances in monitoring, improvements in methods and equipment, technological innovations, and environmental trends. Possible themed sessions include Stream Restoration Effectiveness Monitoring, Water Quality Trends in Chesapeake Bay, Freshwater Streams, and Coastal Bays, Columbia as an Early Attempt at Sustainable Development, Fish Kills, Maryland’s Coldwater Fishes, and Volunteer Monitoring. A conference highlight will be a plenary talk by estuarine ecologist and environmental historian Dr. Kent Mountford, titled Monitoring: A Chesapeake Historical Perspective.

The early-bird registration fee (deadline – November 7, 2014) is $55 and includes lunch, breaks, and conference materials. After November 7, the registration fee is $70. The early registration fee for presenters is $50. Discounts for full-time students and members of non-profit organizations are also available on a first come, first served basis by request. 2014 will mark the Eighth Annual Carl S. Weber Award presented to an individual (or individuals) involved in water monitoring in Maryland. The ideal candidate will share the spirit, vision and leadership exemplified by Dr. Carl Weber. The Award honors those who have volunteered their time and energy towards increasing watershed awareness, advocacy and stewardship of the waters of Maryland. Details on the award and an Award Nomination Form can be found HERE.  Nominations must be submitted by October 10, 2014.

The Third MWMC Student Poster Award will be offered this year. Open to high school and college undergraduates, the Award offers $50 for first place and $25 for second. Click HERE for information and scoring criteria. Teachers can also download and print this FLIER to post on your school’s bulletin board.
